Looking Out For Primates

Tanzania has around 20 species of primates including bushbabies. They are mostly arboreal and hence best adapted to forested habitats.

Besides the chance to see half-a-dozen primate species on a standard Northern Circuit safari, enthusiasts might also want to travel to the Lake Tanganyika region, where the Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains support various western rainforest primates, including populations of habituated chimpanzees. Although Tanzania supports a relatively small population of around 2 000 chimps, it offers the best opportunity anywhere to track them in the wild.
