Whale Shark Diving off Mafia Island

Diving to swim with this globally endangered species is top of the list of many people’s bucket lists, which comes as no surprise when you observe these magnificent gentle giants up close. Adult whale sharks can grow as large as 8 – 12 metres long. They are of the few large animals that one can safely swim with, without cages or baiting.

Interestingly, unlike most whale sharks which routinely swim between countries, the whale sharks found in the waters of Tanzania’s Mafia Island have been observed here all year long – sometimes slightly further off shore, slightly deeper and not surfacing as often, but still here – making it an ideal location to observe them. However, it is best to seek them out from October through to February each year.
