Baker’s Lodge is situated right on the south bank of the mighty Nile River and transects Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda. The vast and magnificent views onto the river are a treat for visitors, as are nesting egret birds, elephants bathing and pods of hippos which can regularly be seen in the water. The lodge is intimate and set within a large private area with direct river access, large shady trees and wetland areas that host abundant birdlife along the water’s edge.
Each of the ten private and individual thatched safari suites is raised from the ground on supporting pillars and comes with its own deck overlooking the river. As the lodge is an eco-friendly top-quality establishment, the facilities are fan cooled, with netted windows and hanging mosquito nets. The en-suite bathrooms use solar panelled hot water showers and baths, and there is solar lighting throughout.
Bakers’ Lodge is an eco-friendly establishment.
The staff are friendly and the service is excellent.
The thatched central lounge, bar and dining area are raised with wooden decks all around which means you will have spectacular 180-degree river views throughout the day, but especially when the sun rises in the early morning or as the sun sets in the evening.
Facilities include a fleet of water-craft which allow for excursions unique to this park. These include visiting the stunning Murchison Falls in Fajao Gorge, the Nile Delta on Lake Albert, sunrise / sunset cruises and sport fishing.
Our on-site vehicles can be reserved for safari drives on the vast savanna of the Northern Bank, to the top of the falls, or to nearby Budongo Forest where you can track wild Chimpanzees.
The property has a curio shop which offers a range of local crafts for sale.
The lodge offers free laundry service.
Enjoy a thrilling hike to the top of Murchison Falls in conjunction with a boat trip. This is your chance to witness an epic display of nature’s power and where the entirety of the Nile River squeezes itself through a mere 8-metre gap.
Not all of the en-suite bathrooms have a view, so if this important to you, you should request this when you make a booking.
As there are wild animals on the property it is advisable to be escorted to your room at night, for safety reasons.
It’s worth noting that the rooms don’t have windows per se. Instead, they have canvas walls which can be opened, leaving a screen to separate you from the outside. On hot nights, it is advisable to sleep with an open canvas and to leave your ceiling fan on.
Light sleepers might find the nocturnal sounds of the animals somewhat disturbing, but Baker’s Lodge will happily provide earplugs to help.
There are no power outlets in the rooms as the lodge is solar-powered, which gives you a great excuse for a digital detox. Wi-Fi is available at the main lodge.
Uganda is a great place to view a vast array of different primate species, with its Kibale National Park containing the highest density in all of Africa.
As well as the chimpanzee and gorilla, the black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, l’Hoest’s and blue monkeys and olive baboons can be seen during game drives and nature walks, along with smaller nocturnal species such as the bushbaby and potto.
The Mgahinga National Park also contains one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered golden monkey.
A visit to Murchison National Park, with its great variety of attractions, is not complete without a visit to the Murchison Falls.
Murchison Falls is a spectacular point along the River Nile, where the 50 m wide river forces its way, with unbelievable power, through a narrow gorge, only 7 – 8 metres wide, before tumbling 43 metres, and then flowing westward into Lake Albert.
Uganda is known as Africa’s premier birding destination with the list of birds found in the country topping 1 000!
Many of these birds live only in the tropical forests and due to some of their remote locations, it is believed that many birds have yet to be classified. Look out for the Crested Crane, the rare Shoebill Stork, Shelly’s Crimsonwing, Great Blue Touraco, Marabou Stork, Saddle-billed Stork and the impressive Standard-Winged nightjar with his ornamental wings.
