Tongabezi Lodge is a romantic hideaway on the banks of the Zambezi River in Zambia – just upstream of Victoria Falls. Privately owned and run, it prides itself on being conservation and community-driven believing that tourism should benefit entire communities. Here, the legendary warmth of the Zambian people is effortlessly combined with its own brand of exclusive ambiance. Our dedicated personal valets welcome guests to a selection of six bespoke houses and five river cottages, all individually styled with designs from all over Africa. Every house and cottage provides a private deck, and each of the six houses has its own plunge or infinity pool. Tongabezi also offers a private island camp, Sindabezi, and a luxury family house, Tangala.

Tongabezi has been on this stretch of the river for over twenty-five years and some of the team have been with the lodge since the beginning. A stay with Tongabezi affords the perfect opportunity to experience Victoria Falls and her beautiful surrounds with all its wildlife. They have an extensive menu of inclusive activities which range from river safaris to a visit to Tongabezi’s very own Trust School, Tujatane. Their guides also recommend an additional range of exclusive excursions throughout the area. Tongabezi guests set their own pace and itinerary. It is recommended that guests spend a minimum three-night stay in order to fully enjoy the programme without feeling rushed. It would be a disservice to rush guests before a Zambezi sunset where they can instead settle down to dinner on their private decks, high over the water in the Lookout or the Hangout, or even out in the middle of the Zambezi River on a floating Sampan.

Why we like it here

The Tongabezi Trust School, Tujatane, is a five-minute walk from the lodge. Not only does it provide free food and education to over 270 local children, it is a wonderful way for guests to interact with the local culture in a mutually respectful environment.

The gardens are immense and guests are very welcome to wander through. Here they grow a lot of their own fruit and vegetables, and try to design their menus around fresh produce coming from the garden.

The Tongabezi Team is mostly made up of local Zambians from Simonga village who have been trained up behind the scenes. Many of them have been with Tongabezi since they started, or for at least ten years. They are the true heart and soul of the lodge.

Tongabezi sits directly on the Zambezi river, so every room, except the family-designed Garden House, has a river view. They also make the most of their position by offering an immense choice of inclusive activities, ranging from island picnics to river safaris.

Sindabezi Island is part of Tongabezi, but fifteen minutes away by boat. It is made up of five open chalets and can be booked exclusively. Guests on the island are looked after by a private chef, a private guide and a private valet. The island also has a plunge pool that looks over the Zambezi where the hippos hang out in the river.

Things to be aware of

The main lodge has a minimum age of 7 and Sindabezi Island has a minimum age of 14, unless the island is being taken privately.

Wi-Fi is restricted to the main areas of Tongabezi.

Guests who are uncomfortable with bugs or very new to Africa may not enjoy the openness of the Sindabezi Island rooms or the Tree House at Tongabezi.

Rovos Rail

Since its establishment in 1989, Rovos Rail has earned its reputation as being the most luxurious train in the world. Passengers get the chance to discover some of Southern Africa’s most spectacular destinations all from the wood-panelled, gleaming five star luxury of a bygone era. Bespoke train safaris offer passengers a series of journeys lasting from 48 hours to 15 days, and depending on your itinerary, stop to allow for “off-train excursions” like a safari, cultural and historical experiences.

The beautifully rebuilt Rovos Rail carries a maximum of 72 passengers in 36 superbly appointed suites including the Royal, Deluxe and Pullman Suites. Although it is a steam train, it may occasionally be hauled by diesel or electric locomotives. It consists of a locomotive, generator car, staff car, guest sleepers, a non-smoking lounge car, two non-smoking 42-seat dining cars, a kitchen car, guest sleepers, smoking Club Lounge and an Observation Car at the tail. Meals are an elegant affair served in one sitting – only in the dining cars – and are complemented by a selection of fine South African wines. An enthusiastic team of chefs is responsible to cater for your every need. They make use of fresh local ingredients and traditional dishes, such as game, are a specialty on board.

Things to be aware of

Children under the age of two are not permitted to travel.

In maintaining the spirit of travel of a bygone era, you will not find any radios nor television sets on board.

Out of respect for other passengers, the use of mobile phones and laptops (and essentially anything that has the ability to disturb other passengers) is confined to the privacy of your suite.

Rovos Rail is reliant on national railway authorities for traction and service (locomotives and drivers) and as a result, delays can be experienced due to faulty equipment and vandalism to infrastructure.

Although the dress code on board is smart casual during the days, evening attire is more formal. For gentlemen, a jacket and tie is a minimum requirement, while for ladies a cocktail / evening dress or suit is recommended.

Nay Palad Bird Nest

The luxurious Segera Retreat can be found in the high savanna grasslands of Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau, nestled between Mount Kenya and the Great Rift Valley. It consists of 9 villas in total: 6 of which are the standard timber and thatch villas, the Segera House, the Villa Segera and the Farm House Signature Villa.

The luxurious standard villas rise on wooden platforms above a profusion of botanical life with great views towards Mount Kenya. Each has a large, en-suite bedroom, a private deck with sun loungers, swing bed and a sunken Jacuzzi outside the bedroom. During your stay at Segera Retreat you will have the opportunity to spend the night at the Nay Palad Bird Nest: A one-of-a-kind accommodation (situated 3 km away from the main retreat, approximate drive of 15 minutes). This is arguably one of the most innovative and luxurious sleep-out experiences in Africa. Perched above the treetops overlooking a river and endless plains, the Bird Nest’s concept is of nesting and sleeping like a bird – above the ground, with literally a 360 degree bird’s eye-view of this beautiful wilderness. The entire nest structure is built and designed from raw materials, such as farmed wood and actual tree branches which have been woven into a nest by local community members. The interior suite features all the trimmings guests could hope for, such as a fully-equipped bathroom with running water (solar heated) and a flushing toilet.

Guests wishing to spend a night at the Bird Nest will arrive there just before sunset, after enjoying an exhilarating game drive or bush walk. The nest is lit up with lanterns, with “Sundowners” of champagne and culinary delights laid out on the top deck, and inviting beds (on the top deck and within the shelter of the first floor) prepared with luxurious linens and comforting hot water bottles, ready for the night ahead. Adventurous guests will enjoy the magical African sunset, feast on a picnic-style dinner on the top deck and fall asleep under the sparkling African sky. The following morning, guests will find a surprise picnic breakfast on their doorstep, to be enjoyed while watching elephant, giraffe and other wildlife at the river.

Apoka Safari Lodge

Apoka Safari Lodge is located on a picturesque “koppie” (small hill) with endless views overlooking the Narus Valley in the southwestern sector of the Kidepo Valley National Park. Kidepo is Uganda’s most remote park, bordering Sudan to the north, the Napore Mountains to the West, and the Morungole mountains to the East. The Kenyan border is just 5 kilometres from the park’s eastern boundary. Travellers who make the long journey north would agree that Kidepo is also the most magnificent park and ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses.

Staying in this luxury lodge is a peaceful and private experience. Wildlife is viewed from the privacy of your veranda, your beautiful private outdoor stone bathtub and of course up close: on foot, or in one of the open-top Land Cruisers. The rooms have been built with comfort in mind and everything is handmade by local craftsmen. Apoka has 10 expansive rooms with natural canvas walls, big hand-hewn beds with soft duvets draped with mosquito nets, sitting rooms, hand-woven woollen carpets, extra-large plush towels, and over-sized dressing gowns. It is possibly the most eco-lux lodge in Uganda and the owners are deeply committed to sustainability and doing the right thing.

Each cottage at Apoka Safari Lodge is built using locally sourced wood, natural canvas, and the decor is handmade by local craftsmen.

The lodge has a deep and cool swimming pool carved out of rock, from where you will have sweeping views of the Narus Valley and the vast savanna.

Apoka has established an ongoing relationship with the village of Lokorul, on the outskirts of the Kidepo Valley National Park and it is from here that they employ staff almost exclusively. Visits to the village are on offer to the guests so as to learn about the local culture. In return, the tourism dollars have contributed to the village building a clinic and Apoka has facilitated regular visits with a doctor in the region.

Kidepo is home to an amazing array of animal including around 80 species of mammals – 28 of which are not found in any other Ugandan National Park, including cheetah.

You can go on a walking safari and enjoy birding here.

Due to its remote location, there are no crowds.

Things to be aware of

There are no fences on the property which means that wild animals can be found roaming around the grounds of the lodge. It is strongly advised that you get an attendant to accompany you when moving about the camp at night.

The lodge has been built in a rocky area, so caution is required while walking.

Despite the abundance of animals and a heavy population of the Big Four, there are no rhinos in Kidepo.

Apoka is not recommended for very young children (5 and under) especially as the lodge is built amongst rocks and cliffs, and due to the fact that there are wildlife wandering around the property.

Sonop

Nestled at the southern extremity of Namibia’s Namib Desert, in the Karas region, lies the newly opened Sonop. This luxurious tented camp was constructed on top of boulders and designed to recreate a refined British colonial experience dating back to the early 20th century. Here you will taste complete isolation while enjoying the ultimate in comfort in this out-of-the-ordinary lodge. The day begins with a daily scenic sunrise drive and ends with an opulent gastronomic experience, where silverware and candelabras set the mood, enhanced by flawless black-tie and white glove service, and attention to detail – just like throughout the facilities at the camp. The lodge is richly furnished with antiques made of fine materials, colourful carpets and precious wood – a sophistication that contrasts starkly with the simplicity of the endless awe-inspiring surroundings.

Sonop consists of ten spacious tents, of which 8 are one-bedroom tents (sleeping 2 adults) and 2 are two-bedroom tents (4 adults and 2 children). The 2-bedroom tents, which are particularly suitable for families, consist of two wide double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a shared living room. All tents offer several roll-up canvas openings with panoramic views and a large bedroom(s). The separate bathroom comes with a double washbasin, a large copper bathtub, which is combined with a rain shower. The bedroom features a four-poster bed with a king-size mattress, a distinct living area with comfortable armchairs, a desk and a telescope to view the distant surroundings. For the ultimate comfort, Sonop also offers a spa with 2 double treatment rooms, a fitness centre, a heated outdoor infinity pool, a pool bar, a cocktail and cigar lounge, stables and a private airstrip.

The minimum age for children is 6 years.

Sonop has plenty of stairs – 461 to be exact – and around 1 km of pathways, making it challenging for guests with limited mobility.

Jongomero

Jongomero lies nestled under the magnificent shade trees in the remote southern sector of the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania. Located on the banks of a seasonal river, it is gloriously isolated. Far from the maddening crowds, guests are welcomed to discover true unadulterated wilderness. Jongomero has a camp bar, lounge and restaurant; an open wooden terrace shaded by a high thatched roof and filled with sumptuous sofas and striking furniture made of reclaimed dhow wood. Take time to laze around the elevated pool and enjoy the sights and sounds of being so close to nature.

Accommodation at Jongomero comprises eight large and well-appointed tented suites, built on raised wooden platforms, under enormous thatched roofs that also encompass a spacious private instant veranda which overlooks the riverbed. Snuggle under warming quilts in an eight-foot wide dhow wood emperor bed and fall asleep to the hum of Africa beyond the canvas.

Why we like it here

Whilst being the largest National Park in Tanzania, Ruaha also holds a special significance as it covers a unique transition zone where the Eastern and Southern biomes intersect offering an extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds. It is second only to Selous Game Reserve for the largest population of wild dog.

Jongomero is one of only 8 camps in the Ruaha National Park and the nearest camp is 60 km away.

Guests can indulge in the luxury of solitude, which offers not only an intimate closeness to nature but also exclusive game-viewing experiences.

Things to be aware of

Fly-camping must be pre-booked. During the day walk and discover the hidden depths of Ruaha while for one or two nights, you can sleep under a canopy of stars after sharing stories around the camp fire and showering under the trees. This adventure is bookable from 15 August to 15 November.

For your safety, on game walks and walking safaris, over and above the armed qualified walking guide, there is an armed TANAPA ranger.

Due to safety concerns and other guests’ enjoyment of the camps, we accept children from six years old with international bookings and children from 10 years old with resident bookings. At Jongomero we have a limit of two children (aged 6 – 11) in camp at any one time. Children in camp are the responsibility of the parent or guardian at all times.

andBeyond Mnemba Island Lodge

Off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar, in Tanzania, lies the private &Beyond Mnemba Island – serene and exquisite – inhabited only by guests and the staff taking care of them. Mnemba’s calm azure seas, white coral beaches and spectacular coral reefs offer irresistible snorkelling, scuba-diving, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and permanent swimming directly from the beach.

This barefoot luxury destination has just 12 rustic palm-frond bandas (including a family banda – two rooms next to one another joined by a wooden walkway) which are tucked into a tropical forest fringed by a white coral sand beach. A covered walkway leads to a shuttered en-suite bathroom with a huge glass-beaded shower curtain. Zanzibar is famous for its intricate detailed woodcarvings and the scrolled headboards adorning the beds are created by some of the Island’s most skilled artisans. Built-in barazas on the veranda are perfect for afternoon siestas and twelve private beach salas feature traditional Zanzibari loungers ideal for languid hours, a table, ceiling fan, personal bar, two day beds and a shower.

Thatched dining areas boast beautiful open views of the beach and spectacular vistas of Zanzibar and beyond. Lunch is often served on large wooden carved Zanzibari platters heaped with delicious mezze.

Why we like it here

Turtle season peaks between April and August (however, laying can occur year-round) and these prehistoric creatures can be seen laying their eggs on the beaches. Within nine weeks, the beaches are filled with tiny turtle hatchlings.

The island, just 1.5 km (less than a mile) in circumference, boasts some of Africa’s most magnificent dive sites.

Mnemba is renowned as one of the most romantic ocean destinations in the world, offering a privacy and rustic exclusivity unparalleled on the African coastline. Romantic candlelit dinners are served on the beach, with the waves lapping gently at guests’ feet.

Baskets of fresh fruit, fish, lobsters, crabs and prawns sail into Mnemba daily on traditional ngalawa outriggers.

Set on the banks of the perennial Klaserie River is the flagship five-star lodge of Kapama Game Reserve: Kapama Karula. Meaning “place of peace”, this ultra-luxurious and prestigious lodge exudes calmness and depicts the pinnacle of elegant safari accommodation, with wraparound views of the African bush enhancing the sense of tranquillity at this exclusive safari lodge.

Kapama Karula has ten Superior Villas, each exquisitely decorated and with generous private space. These suites measure at least 90 m² each, with an opulent en-suite bathroom featuring indoor and outdoor showers, his and hers washbasins, and a bath. Standard in each Superior Villa is a mini bar stocked with a selection of fine wines and champagne, a Nespresso coffee machine, a lock-up safe, an international adaptor, a Wi-Fi connection and an iPod docking station. At the end of 2018 an extensive rebuilding and refurbishment project was completed. There is now a brand new double-volume lounge and dining room with a beanbag-filled viewing lounge. On the beach there are new salas and pool loungers to relax on after a day of trekking. For the perfect sundowners or private evening dinner the wooden jetty was extended. The rooms also received a beautiful makeover completely removing the old tents, extending the floor space and building new roofs. The side walls now have stretched canvas complimented by brand new furniture from front to back. In the back of the rooms you will find new double-basin bathrooms.

Zarafa Camp

Zarafa Camp is an intimate, four-room exquisite tented camp located on the private 130 000 hectare Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana. The reserve links the Okavango Delta and the Chobe / Savute corridors. Few camps rival the location of this little gem, Botswana’s first and only Relais & Chateaux property. Overlooking the crystal waters of Zibadianja Lagoon, the source of the famous Savute Channel, every area of the camp has a magnificent view. The lagoon is also the water source for a tremendous population of wildlife – dry season sightings boast buffalo and elephant by the hundreds. Zarafa Camp is deemed to be the best and most environmentally-innovative camp on the continent. Only recycled hardwoods and canvas were used in the construction and all the camp’s electricity comes from its solar farm, while ‘bio gas’ plants recycle waste into usable cooking gas.

The guest tents are under beige, flowing canvas, with canopy ceilings and completely open (yet netted) sides. Each tent, averaging 100 m², has a full lounge with desk and gas fireplace for winter. The large bedroom is connected to an open layout bathroom with impressive copper claw foot bath, indoor shower, separate toilet and double basins. Railway sleeper wrap around decks lead to a private plunge pool and full-body outdoor shower, all with views of pristine Botswana wilderness. Under an impressive canopy of African ebony trees, the camp has a sizeable main lounge, with adjacent library and dining area. A curio shop satiates those who need retail therapy. Sculpted into Mughwango Hill in Kenya’s Meru National Park lies the unashamedly romantic and beautifully styled Elsa’s Kopje. Named after Elsa the lioness, made famous by Adamson’s biographical book and film “Born Free”, Elewana Elsa’s Kopje remains one of the most elegant lodges in Africa, located in one of the most spectacular settings. Elsa’s Kopje is credited with single-handedly having rescued the Meru National Park from oblivion. Today, the park is one of the most beautiful in Africa, and apart from being home to plentiful lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and rhino, it is known for its diversity of habitat and wildlife, including the rare and beautiful lesser Kudu.

The National Park incorporates an 84 km² rhino sanctuary, home to over 70 rhino, both black and white species.

All guides are certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association at Bronze or Silver level.

Morning and afternoon game drives are shared with other guests.

Each of the 6 en-suite cottages consists of a main bedroom, en-suite bathroom (some have outdoor baths) and private deck. Cottage 3 has a private sitting room rather than deck.

Two of the honeymoon suites have romantic outside baths, while the third has three levels featuring a private sitting room, main bedroom with en-suite bathroom, and a small private deck.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge is located on a 178-acre piece of land right on the edge of Volcanoes National Park. The latter is home to more than one third of the remaining mountain gorillas in the world. This oasis of nine luxurious cottages lies surrounded by the lush, evergreen landscapes of the Ugandan Great Crater Lakes region. It is set between two extinct volcanoes and located in close proximity to Lyantonde and Kifuruka lakes.

Each cottage offers complete privacy and is situated on the extinct volcano crater’s slope with breathtaking views of the Lyantonde Lake. Hiking / walking can be done close to the lodge as one of the craters is easily accessed from there. These can take between 1 – 4 hours, and along the way, you can choose to incorporate a cultural visit.

Things to be aware of

As the property is on a hill with the reception, common area and restaurant on one level and the cottages on a lower level accessible by a long set of steps, this facility is not conducive to people with physical mobility limitations.

As the lodge is solar powered, there are no power points in the cottage. Charging of devices can be done in the reception / lounge area.

There is no air conditioning.

Many of the activities take a while to get to and from the lodge.

If you are interested in Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park, bear in mind that the transfer there takes around 45 minutes. The Chimpanzee tracking has two shifts which start at 08:00 or 14:00, and the length depends very much on guests’ fitness levels and condition.
Hot Springs and walking in Semuliki National Park takes 2.5 hours to get to.

For Game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, which takes around 2 hours to get to, it would make better sense to spend the night in the actual park.

For gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, you would enter through Buhoma on the northern side of the park and the transfer will take around 6 hours to get there.

Luangwa Safari House

Sitting gracefully on the edge of a lagoon system in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, is where you will find the Luangwa Safari House. This unspoilt wilderness area marks the end of the Great Rift Valley and an area that is possibly one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa. Here, the great meandering Luangwa river runs, with its ox bow lagoons, riverine-supported woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo and over 450 species of birds.

The impressive Luangwa Safari House was designed to delight the senses from the minute you arrive, with its strong castle-like structure looming up in front of you. It has four large en-suite bedrooms which have been decorated to mimic the elements – water, earth, wind and fire – to encompass the feeling of bringing nature into the house.

The front of the large airy main area is completely open, affording incredible views of the landscape and countless animals as they stroll past the house. The ceiling, which reaches up to twelve metres in height, is dominated by enticing sofas, two floating staircases on either side leading to the upstairs bedrooms and a large wrought iron and marble dining table. The open front of the main area leads on to a tiled terrace with a refreshing plunge pool on one side and a decked walkway through the ebony trees on the other.

Mweya is an ornithologist’s paradise as it lies in the Queen Elizabeth National Park which hosts 612 bird species, which is the second highest of any park in Africa. The ‘farm to plate’ dining experience at Sirikoi is exceptional. Meals at Sirikoi are colourful, fresh and unpretentious. All meals are served on the Sirikoi deck overlooking the Sirikoi waterhole. You will be delighted by the simple and elegant home-styled cooking, and even more so when they see where most of the fresh produce comes from – the prolific organic vegetable garden. Dining out in the wilderness on bush meals and having sundowners are another favourite experience at Sirikoi.

Visiting the Sirikoi vegetable garden and taking a tour with George Kaberia, the head groundsman, is an unexpected highlight for most guests. Learning from George and seeing first-hand what is involved in the organic farming process is fascinating and hugely rewarding.

With spring water feeding the garden, naturally rich soil, organic elephant-dung fertilizer made on site, and equatorial sunshine, the garden produces an impressive amount of fruits, vegetables and herbs – over 80 in fact – all year round.

Sirikoi enjoys a lovely spring-like climate almost all year round, with Kenya’s arid North to one side, and the lush foothills of Mount Kenya on the other. Mornings are brisk, midday is rather warm, and evenings are always cool enough to appreciate a fire. The lodge is located at 5,500ft.

Mid-April to mid-May and November are usually the rainy seasons. January to March are the warmest months, and June to September is a bit colder.

The lodge grounds are fenced with a raised electric wire to keep elephant out of the garden to protect our trees. All other wildlife can move around freely. Askaris or night watchmen escort guests to and from their rooms at night with a torch, and in the day it is safe to walk around camp. There are askaris on duty 24 hours a day who are in radio contact with the manager should a guest needs assistance at night.

The lodge is located in a minimal risk area at 5,500 ft where the malarial mosquito does not exist. There are very surprisingly few insects in general and guests enjoy dining outside at all meals. Insect-repellant sprays and creams can be brought along if desired.

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is nestled deep inside the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – in southwestern Uganda. Sanctuary Retreats actively work to support the Ebenezer Nursery and Primary School, in the Kanungu district, right on the peripherals of the famous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and nearby Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. Challenges are enormous when it comes to meeting the educational needs of a growing community, especially in one of the most remote corners of Uganda. And yet the Ebenezer School operates. Built with a mix of used and donated building supplies, and because it’s a new start-up, the school is not yet Government-registered and receives no formal government support. Therefore, Sanctuary Retreats and their guests are working to help the parents and teachers at the school build sufficient infrastructure to satisfy Government registration requirements, including replacing the roof, building three new classrooms, building proper toilets, buying new furniture and text books, and helping to establish baseline salaries for the teachers. The ultimate goal is to help get the new school formally registered with the Ministry of Education, who will then pay teacher salaries and provide school support through formal Ministerial channels.

The camp is frequently visited by gorilla families due to its unique location.

Things to be aware of

It is important to understand how the winds and tides change throughout the seasons in Diani, and how Alfajiri deals with it. The section of beach directly in front of Alfajiri Villas changes from middle of November to the end of January each year. In this part of the world they have trade winds and the Kazkazi winds change the landscape. The Kaskazi (north-easterly) wind blows and moves the sand away leaving the corals and rocks in front of the villas exposed at low tide. This is the case for a few months each year.

Alfajiri provides guests with reef-shoes; if you walk for few minutes along the beach, you will eventually reach pristine white sands. By the mid to end of January, the Kaskasi wind brings back the sands and white beaches can be enjoyed once more.

There is an open Land Rover to transport clients to the different beaches during their stay.

Diani Beach is a residential area and as a result, restaurants, cafes and nightlife are limited.

Nkwichi, which means “the sand that squeaks”, is a lost hideaway on the pristine Mozambican shores of Lago Niassa (Lake Malawi). Its 5 large spacious chalets were hand-built using local materials, which mingle with the miombo woodland that stretches from the vast Manda Wilderness Conservation Area all the way down to white sand, washed by crystal-clear water. The Chalets house enormous beds with gleaming tree-trunk mosquito-net posts, living areas and private toilets. The outdoor bathrooms are surrounded by tangled greenery from where you can laze back in a huge bubble bath sculpted into primordial rock.

Nkwichi also offers a private house called Mokolo House that is best-suited for groups or families. It sleeps 2 adults and 2 to 3 children, or 4 adults – in 2 bedrooms. Arriving at Likoma Island (Malawi) by ferry or by plane, guests will be stamped out of Malawi by Likoma officials, hop on a boat across to Cobue, stamp into Mozambique (and get a visa on arrival if they wish) and then carry on to Nkwichi.

Little Kulala

Little Kulala is a welcome oasis situated on the dry Auab riverbed in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, in the splendour and solitude of the Namib Desert, Namibia. The design of Little Kulala was inspired by Dead Vlei, a clay pan characterised by dark, dead camel thorn trees more than 900 years old, contrasted against the white pan floor. It consists of 11 climate-controlled, thatched “kulalas”, each with a private plunge pool, and merges seamlessly into the timeless desert setting. Of the 11 units, 10 are twin-bedded units each with two three-quarter beds and the one family unit with two three-quarter beds in each bedroom. Mattress converters are available that transform twin beds into king-size beds.

Each room comprises en-suite facilities and an outdoor shower, separate toilet, tea and coffee making facilities, mini-bar, mosquito net, writing desk and chair, indoor lounge area, luggage rack, electronic safe, hairdryer and an air-conditioner which ensures a comfortable temperature. Each villa has the addition of a rooftop Star Bed for romantic stargazing. The main lodge comprises a reception, lounge, bar, dining room, library, curio cupboard, wine cellar and deck on a raised wooden deck with a thatched roof. There is a central, shaded swimming pool in the main area and an open deck overlooking a floodlit waterhole. There are a range of activities available to guests to best appreciate the area: Desert nature drives, walks, eco-sensitive quad-biking, excursions to Sossusvlei and a balloon safari – an awe-inspiring experience soaring silently above the desert.

Once farmland used for subsistence goat farming, the region had very little indigenous wildlife. In 1996, Wilderness Safaris stepped in to rehabilitate the area and today the land and its wildlife have returned to their former glory.

Of the desert-adapted wildlife on the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, look out for ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, spotted hyena and the occasional brown hyena. Smaller creatures such as bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox and aardwolf can also be seen.

Guided scorpion walks are available at night, weather permitting.

Guests who wish to self-drive into the National Park are required to use the public Sessriem entrance, as the Kulala Gate on the property is for Wilderness Safaris and camp vehicles only.

Fanjove Private Island

When you think of Fanjove Private Island, think palm-fringed, powder-white sands, azure, shimmering waters, the call of birdsong and the whole island all to yourself. More or less. The island is part of Tanzania’s Songo Songo archipelago, and is a mere kilometre in length and 400 metres wide.

With only 6 eco-friendly Robinson Crusoe-type Bandas, Fanjove accommodates 12 people and its staff. The bandas are A-framed, shaped to resemble a Dhow sail, and each is open at its front to capitalise on the uninterrupted ocean views (which can also be enjoyed from the upstairs balcony). The whole property has been designed to minimise its environmental footprint. Solar power is employed for all the rooms, and the buildings use traditional, natural materials – sustainable wood, mukuti (palm leaves) and thatch.

Fish River Lodge

The Fish River Lodge is the only lodge situated directly on the western edge of Namibia’s Fish River Canyon – the largest canyon in Africa, as well as the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia. The views are naturally spectacular, and the sunrises and sunsets even more so. From here, incredible hiking and cycling trails meander down into the heart of the canyon affording guests spectacular scenery combined with 75 kilometres of river frontage made up of permanent waterholes and rock pools. This attracts an array of wildlife species including Hartmans Zebra, Kudu, Oryx, Springbok as well as endemic birdlife.

Set in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Botswana, the new Jao Camp will retain the same high stilted main area built into the tree canopy, with more private areas in amongst the trees. Singita Lebombo lies on the N’wanetsi River in a 33 000-acre private concession in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Baker’s Lodge

Baker’s Lodge is situated right on the south bank of the mighty Nile River and transects Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda. The vast and magnificent views onto the river are a treat for visitors, as are nesting egret birds, elephants bathing and pods of hippos which can regularly be seen in the water. The lodge is intimate and set within a large private area with direct river access, large shady trees and wetland areas that host abundant birdlife along the water’s edge.

Each of the ten private and individual thatched safari suites is raised from the ground on supporting pillars and comes with its own deck overlooking the river. As the lodge is an eco-friendly top-quality establishment, the facilities are fan cooled, with netted windows and hanging mosquito nets. The en-suite bathrooms use solar panelled hot water showers and baths, and there is solar lighting throughout.

Things to be aware of

Not all of the en-suite bathrooms have a view, so if this important to you, you should request this when you make a booking.

As there are wild animals on the property it is advisable to be escorted to your room at night, for safety reasons.

It’s worth noting that the rooms don’t have windows per se. Instead, they have canvas walls which can be opened, leaving a screen to separate you from the outside. On hot nights, it is advisable to sleep with an open canvas and to leave your ceiling fan on.

Light sleepers might find the nocturnal sounds of the animals somewhat disturbing, but Baker’s Lodge will happily provide earplugs to help.

There are no power outlets in the rooms as the lodge is solar-powered, which gives you a great excuse for a digital detox. Wi-Fi is available at the main lodge.

Set under large, shady albida trees with uninterrupted views of the Kunene River in Namibia, lies the luxurious desert retreat of Serra Cafema. This is one of the most remote camps in southern Africa and a place where guests can truly disconnect, unwind and relax to the sound of rushing water, in one of the driest deserts in the world. Serra Cafema has eight “chalets” that are set on elevated decks and crafted in wood, canvas and thatch to create a unique camp that is at one with its surroundings. Seven of these are twin-bedded luxury tents each with two three-quarter beds. There is also one family luxury tented unit with two three-quarter beds in each bedroom, and each with its own bathroom. The bedrooms are connected through an adjoining deck with a shared sala.

The luxury canvas tents each comprise en-suite facilities with separate toilet, double vanity basin, indoor- and outdoor shower, indoor lounge area, outdoor sala and shaded seating / lounging deck area, mosquito net, electronic safe, hairdryer, writing desk and chair, mini-bar and tea and coffee making facilities. The main area, or “Ozonganda” in Herero, comprises various dining areas, sunken lounge, bar, curio corner and viewing decks affording spectacular views over the Kunene River. There is also a swimming pool.

Na’an ku se Lodge is Namibia’s first “charity” lodge, which combines conservation, responsible tourism and luxury accommodation. N/a’an ku sê means “God will protect us” in the San Bushman language, and their first love is the San people of Namibia. They employ San people from across Namibia to tend to guests which in turn adds to their socio-economic growth. Guests also have the opportunity to learn about the San culture.

The lodge is located only thirty minutes from Hosea Kutako International Airport along the Khomas Hochland (a part of the interior plateau of central Namibia) and amongst camelthorn trees and riverbeds. Lion Sands Game Reserve is set along the banks of the perennial Sabie River in South Africa. Of the entire Wolwedans Collection, Boulders Safari Camp is the most remote and “classic”. Found nestled into the grandeur of massive granite rocks, it is situated 45 km south of Wolwedans in Namibia and as far off the beaten track as it can get. The camp makes an ideal location from where guests can explore the deep south of NamibRand Nature Reserve with its vast stretches of pristine nature, as well as encountering small and large desert dwellers, intriguing flora and fascinating geology. Lion Sands Game Reserve is set along the banks of the perennial Sabie River in South Africa. It is the only private game reserve rooted in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and the Kruger National Park. With friendly personal service and stunning views over Lake Malawi, Pumulani is the perfect African beach lodge. Pumulani means “rest well” in the local Chichewa language, and that’s exactly what’s on offer here – the chance to unwind in a beautiful and tranquil setting. Each of the villas has a large bedroom, which opens out onto a private deck where early risers can enjoy the morning’s first rays. By night, the underwater spotlights situated on all sides of the room attract the shyer and more unusual marine life, for instance squid. King’s Pool

Steeped in nostalgia and named for Scandinavian royalty, newly-renovated and elegant King’s Pool overlooks the handsome oxbow lagoon of the same name in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, bordering Chobe National Park – at the crux of the important wildlife corridor that straddles Angola, Namibia, Zambia and Botswana. It was in 1976 that King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden arrived as newlyweds in Botswana on honeymoon. In an effort to escape the paparazzi, they made their way to a remote place close to Chobe called the Linyanti. There they camped on the banks of an oxbow lagoon and fell in love with Botswana.

That love of the unspoilt wild lived on in this place. The newly built stylish camp overlooks the oxbow-shaped King’s Pool Lagoon and Linyanti River system. Activities include day and night game drives, walks, and nearby hides, ideal for photographing birds and wildlife.

In the dry season, guests can spend their siesta watching game come down to drink at the unique underground hide, where the water is at eye level. Seeing elephant feet and trunks almost within touching distance while safely inside the hide, is an experience that transcends that of an ordinary safari. There are nine well-appointed rooms (including a family unit) of canvas and thatch each with a veranda and thatched sala from where guests get to soak up the views. The main areas, set on expansive decks, include a pool and an open-air “kgotla” (boma) for dining under the stars.

In some cases, the guides will be able to identify individual animals and let you know about their history and habits. The Kichwa Tembo concession is the only place in the Masai Mara where guests can experience night game drives and is well worth it! Lion Sands Game Reserve is set along the banks of the perennial Sabie River in South Africa. It is the only private game reserve rooted in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and the Kruger National Park. Wildwaters Lodge lies on a unique private island, nestled in luxuriant rainforest, mid-stream within the mighty River Nile in Uganda. Its supreme location on Kalagala Island can only be reached by boat, which makes it a very adventurous place to stay. It is uniquely perched on granite rocks with noisy and exciting foamy rapids roaring all around.

The accommodation is made up of ten stand-alone, elevated timber-floor, luxury suites with amazing river views. Of the suites, nine are deluxe suites and 1 is a family suite. Some suites have a unique view of the Nile rapids that are both breathtaking and spectacular, while other rooms offer views of a tranquil Nile. All suites are private and exclusive and can be made into a double, triple or twin configuration. A day bed is standard in all suites.

The suites enjoy glass-fronted windows, locally handmade furniture, stylish bathrooms with rain showers and secluded wooden decks with daybeds and romantic free-standing open-air bathtubs. Additionally, a room safe, mosquito nets and complimentary toiletries are available.

Elevated wooden walkways gracefully link the rooms to the restaurant and bar area, and offer an unforgettable walk through the heart of the forest. The main lodge is located on a solid rock peninsula amidst the rapids of the River Nile.

There is a lovely swimming pool carved out of natural pink granite rocks in the main communal lodge area. When it comes to dining, Wildwaters Lodge has delicious and far above-standard sunrise breakfasts and their dinners consist of a candle-lit five course á la carte menu. Meals are taken in the main area by the pool-side with magnificent views of the River Nile, but on request, private dinners can be catered for in your room or at the pool-side.

As the lodge is situated in the middle of The River Nile and on a private island surrounded by beautiful forests, the views from the lodge are magnificent.

Adventure lovers will be delighted to know of the lodge’s close proximity to the adventure-hub of Jinja (30 minutes) where activities like heart-pounding white-water rafting, bungee jumping and jet boating are on offer. There is also horse-riding and fishing activities as a gentler option.

Uganda is famous for its more than 1 000 bird species and Wildwaters is a perfect platform for viewing all sorts, from touracos and cuckoos to hawks and eagles.

Things to be aware of

The roar of the racing white-water rapids creates noise that might disturb a night’s sleep. For some, earplugs might come in handy, while for others, however, the noise might be quite hypnotic and calming.

It’s worth noting that during certain periods of the year, the surrounding forests attract tsetse flies, and care should be taken to avoid being bitten by them. Precautionary measures include covering over exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and hats. Wear clothing fabric that has at least a medium weight. Wear neutral-coloured clothing as the tsetse fly is attracted to bright colours, very dark colours, metallic fabric, and the colour blue. Use an appropriate insect repellent as directed. Should you get bitten, apply antihistamine on the bites to remove the need to itch as broken skin is more inclined to become infected.

Parents need to keep an eye on their children as Wildwaters Lodge is situated on an island surrounded by grade 5 plus rapids.

The lodge welcomes day visitors at a cost, from 11:00 until the last boat off the island at 17:00. Should they choose to use the swimming pool and its facilities, they are charged additionally.

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

As its name suggests, the award-winning Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is the highest lodge in Uganda at 2 000 metres above sea level. It is set on a forested ridge near the entrance of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The lodge consists of 7 spacious cottages built from volcanic stone. Warm and welcoming, each cottage features a bedroom, en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower and a separate lounge. Comfortable chairs on the outdoor verandas provide the perfect vantage point to admire the unforgettable vistas of the forest below. Blazing fireplaces create a cosy glow as evening falls. Two of the cottages are suitable for families and have two double rooms, each with its own private bathroom.

BirdNest Resort

BirdNest Resort is situated in southwestern Uganda on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi, only 2.5 hours away from Rwanda’s capital Kigali or 6 hours from Uganda’s capital Kampala. Spectacular views can be enjoyed here as the lodge is surrounded by picturesque green hills covered with farming terraces and a great array of birds of all sizes.

The lodge, which is easily recognisable by the big thatched roof, has a fascinating history. It tells the story of Francis (Frank) Kalemera Kalimuzo, who had visited Lake Bunyonyi many years back, fell in love with the area and decided to make it his home. In about 1963, he started putting up the first building at the lake, but this never came to fruition because even as he built, tourists asked if they could stay there.

Frank was an educated man who worked his way up to the position of Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. A military coup in 1972 brought drastic changes to the history of Uganda and his association with former President Obote was looked on with suspicion by the new President Idi Amin. In 1972, members of the notorious Public Safety Unit raided Frank Kalimuzo’s home and arrested him. He was never seen again. His legacy lives on and his devotion to work and patriotism was remarkable. In the period of Amin’s reign of terror the property and lives of many people were destroyed. The hotel at Lake Bunyonyi was occupied and vandalised by the soldiers of Amin’s regime. Frank Kalimuzo’s widow tried desperately to keep the hotel running, but the whole nation was falling apart.

Subsequent change of regimes in Uganda brought about peace and stability to the nation and a group of Belgian investors located Frank’s widow and renegotiated to renovate the hotel. The original hotel was rebuilt and expanded from a four-bedroomed lodging to the fifteen cozy-roomed building that is BirdNest Resort today – all with lake views.

There are also an additional seven nature-inspired cottages across the water for those who prefer more privacy.

Why we like it here

Ornithophiles (or bird lovers) will get some great viewing here. The word “Bunyonyi” locally means “birds” and the lake derived its name due to its attraction to over 200 bird species, including the grey-crowned crane, the white-tailed blue monard, the herons, the African Harrier Hawk, the egrets, slender-billed baglafetch, levillant cuckoo and the cardinal woodpecker.

The hotel has free use of dugout canoes which is a great reason to explore Lake Bunyonyi – by yourself or with a local captain.

The food is great here and their “speciality of the house” is any dish with fresh, local crayfish from the lake – and of course the original crispy Belgian chips.
