Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is nestled deep inside the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – in southwestern Uganda. Due to its location, it is a perfect base for once-in-a-lifetime encounters with endangered mountain gorillas whether on a trek or in the camp itself. Another philanthropy effort came about in an attempt to find a balance between gorilla conservation and human health for populations that live on the edge of the wilderness. Sanctuary Retreats actively work to support the Ebenezer Nursery and Primary School, in the Kanungu district, right on the peripherals of the famous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and nearby Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. Challenges are enormous when it comes to meeting the educational needs of a growing community, especially in one of the most remote corners of Uganda. And yet the Ebenezer School operates. Built with a mix of used and donated building supplies, and because it’s a new start-up, the school is not yet Government-registered and receives no formal government support. Therefore, Sanctuary Retreats and their guests are working to help the parents and teachers at the school build sufficient infrastructure to satisfy Government registration requirements, including replacing the roof, building three new classrooms, building proper toilets, buying new furniture and text books, and helping to establish baseline salaries for the teachers. The ultimate goal is to help get the new school formally registered with the Ministry of Education, who will then pay teacher salaries and provide school support through formal Ministerial channels.

The camp is frequently visited by gorilla families due to its unique location.

You will have the opportunity for community interaction and a walk to visit the local Batwa people.

Specially customised sedan chairs with support and harness allow less able guests to be carried into the rainforest to track the endangered gorillas in their natural habitat.

Mealtimes afford you a taste of Uganda with simple flavours and fresh local ingredients, like traditional smoked beef in peanut sauce served with Kalo (millet bread).

Jongomero

Jongomero lies nestled under the magnificent shade trees in the remote southern sector of the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania. Located on the banks of a seasonal river, it is gloriously isolated. Far from the maddening crowds, guests are welcomed to discover true unadulterated wilderness. Jongomero has a camp bar, lounge and restaurant; an open wooden terrace shaded by a high thatched roof and filled with sumptuous sofas and striking furniture made of reclaimed dhow wood. Take time to laze around the elevated pool and enjoy the sights and sounds of being so close to nature.

Accommodation at Jongomero comprises eight large and well-appointed tented suites, built on raised wooden platforms, under enormous thatched roofs that also encompass a spacious private instant veranda which overlooks the riverbed. Snuggle under warming quilts in an eight-foot wide dhow wood emperor bed and fall asleep to the hum of Africa beyond the canvas.

Whilst being the largest National Park in Tanzania, Ruaha also holds a special significance as it covers a unique transition zone where the Eastern and Southern biomes intersect offering an extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds. It is second only to Selous Game Reserve for the largest population of wild dog.

Jongomero is one of only 8 camps in the Ruaha National Park and the nearest camp is 60 km away.

Guests can indulge in the luxury of solitude, which offers not only an intimate closeness to nature but also exclusive game-viewing experiences.

Things to be aware of

Fly-camping must be pre-booked. During the day walk and discover the hidden depths of Ruaha while for one or two nights, you can sleep under a canopy of stars after sharing stories around the camp fire and showering under the trees. This adventure is bookable from 15 August to 15 November.

For your safety, on game walks and walking safaris, over and above the armed qualified walking guide, there is an armed TANAPA ranger.

Due to safety concerns and other guests’ enjoyment of the camps, we accept children from six years old with international bookings and children from 10 years old with resident bookings. At Jongomero we have a limit of two children (aged 6 – 11) in camp at any one time. Children in camp are the responsibility of the parent or guardian at all times.

The camp is closed in April and May.

At the end of 2018 an extensive rebuilding and refurbishment project was completed. There is now a brand new double-volume lounge and dining room with a beanbag-filled viewing lounge. On the beach there are new salas and pool loungers to relax on after a day of trekking. For the perfect sundowners or private evening dinner the wooden jetty was extended. The rooms also received a beautiful makeover completely removing the old tents, extending the floor space and building new roofs. The side walls now have stretched canvas complimented by brand new furniture from front to back. In the back of the rooms you will find new double-basin bathrooms.

King’s Pool

Steeped in nostalgia and named for Scandinavian royalty, newly-renovated and elegant King’s Pool overlooks the handsome oxbow lagoon of the same name in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, bordering Chobe National Park – at the crux of the important wildlife corridor that straddles Angola, Namibia, Zambia and Botswana. It was in 1976 that King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden arrived as newlyweds in Botswana on honeymoon. In an effort to escape the paparazzi, they made their way to a remote place close to Chobe called the Linyanti. There they camped on the banks of an oxbow lagoon and fell in love with Botswana.

That love of the unspoilt wild lived on in this place. The newly built stylish camp overlooks the oxbow-shaped King’s Pool Lagoon and Linyanti River system. Activities include day and night game drives, walks, and nearby hides, ideal for photographing birds and wildlife.

In the dry season, guests can spend their siesta watching game come down to drink at the unique underground hide, where the water is at eye level. Seeing elephant feet and trunks almost within touching distance while safely inside the hide, is an experience that transcends that of an ordinary safari. There are nine well-appointed rooms (including a family unit) of canvas and thatch each with a veranda and thatched sala from where guests get to soak up the views. The main areas, set on expansive decks, include a pool and an open-air “kgotla” (boma) for dining under the stars.

King’s Pool is a place of memories, but also of migrations and movement – from meta-herds of elephant to carmine bee-eaters. It is the centre of ancient paths that cross borders, and even older tectonic plates, whose movements create vistas and the Savute Channel.

Things to be aware of

As the property is on a hill with the reception, common area and restaurant on one level and the cottages on a lower level accessible by a long set of steps, this facility is not conducive to people with physical mobility limitations.

As the lodge is solar powered, there are no power points in the cottage. Charging of devices can be done in the reception / lounge area.

There is no air conditioning.

Many of the activities take a while to get to and from the lodge.

If you are interested in Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park, bear in mind that the transfer there takes around 45 minutes. The Chimpanzee tracking has two shifts which start at 08:00 or 14:00, and the length depends very much on guests’ fitness levels and condition.
Hot Springs and walking in Semuliki National Park takes 2.5 hours to get to.

For Game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, which takes around 2 hours to get to, it would make better sense to spend the night in the actual park.

For gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, you would enter through Buhoma on the northern side of the park and the transfer will take around 6 hours to get there.

Little Kulala

Little Kulala is a welcome oasis situated on the dry Auab riverbed in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, in the splendour and solitude of the Namib Desert, Namibia. The design of Little Kulala was inspired by Dead Vlei, a clay pan characterised by dark, dead camel thorn trees more than 900 years old, contrasted against the white pan floor. It consists of 11 climate-controlled, thatched “kulalas”, each with a private plunge pool, and merges seamlessly into the timeless desert setting. Of the 11 units, 10 are twin-bedded units each with two three-quarter beds and the one family unit with two three-quarter beds in each bedroom. Mattress converters are available that transform twin beds into king-size beds.

Each room comprises en-suite facilities and an outdoor shower, separate toilet, tea and coffee making facilities, mini-bar, mosquito net, writing desk and chair, indoor lounge area, luggage rack, electronic safe, hairdryer and an air-conditioner which ensures a comfortable temperature. Each villa has the addition of a rooftop Star Bed for romantic stargazing. The main lodge comprises a reception, lounge, bar, dining room, library, curio cupboard, wine cellar and deck on a raised wooden deck with a thatched roof. There is a central, shaded swimming pool in the main area and an open deck overlooking a floodlit waterhole. Once farmland used for subsistence goat farming, the region had very little indigenous wildlife. In 1996, Wilderness Safaris stepped in to rehabilitate the area and today the land and its wildlife have returned to their former glory.

Of the desert-adapted wildlife on the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, look out for ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, spotted hyena and the occasional brown hyena. Smaller creatures such as bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox and aardwolf can also be seen.

Fishermen can target a full range of game fish, from sailfish to giant trevally, bonito and marlin (catch-and-release).

Lion Sands River Lodge

Lion Sands Game Reserve is set along the banks of the perennial Sabie River in South Africa. It is the only private game reserve rooted in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and the Kruger National Park. Each of its lodges has its own allure and each has breathtaking views of the river – especially when the animals come to drink. River Lodge, one of the four luxury riverside lodges, can be found on the Sabi Sand side of the reserve, arguably Africa’s most pristine Big Five territory. It offers a chic design interpretation of the traditional safari lodge. The décor is contemporary and a lot of effort has been put in to creating a flow between interior and exterior. River Lodge’s accommodation comprises 8 Luxury Rooms, 6 Superior Luxury Rooms and 4 River Suites (each with its own plunge pool). One of the Family River Suites includes a second children’s en-suite bedroom, laid out with their own amenities, to give children (and their parents) their own space. Wooden walkways lead off to a spa, gym and pool, and back to the main lodge, where the deck’s connected water features give the impression of floating on the river. And then there’s the ultimate in bush bedrooms, where guests get to spend a night discovering the magic of sleeping out under the stars in complete luxury at either Chalkley or Kingston Treehouse. Guests arrive at sunset to a picnic dinner, spend the dusk hours watching animals wander past (at a safe distance), and fall asleep counting shooting stars. Singita Ebony Lodge

The new Singita Ebony Lodge is located in South Africa’s Sabi Sand on the banks of the Sand River. It is a fresh and contemporary interpretation of the classic safari lodge. External walls have given way to canvas and glass, creating new safari “tent-style” suites which maximise views and space, and allow guests to be immersed in nature. The lodge is styled to recreate the romance and adventure of tented camps in days gone by. Interiors are enhanced by the lustre of well-polished ebony and mahogany woods and natural fibres in cool tones. Furthermore there is the rich, golden glow of old brass, hand-woven baskets, traditional khaki and beige tent canvas, and exposed thatch.

The 12 suites are as follows: 8 x suites ideal for singles and couples traveling together, 2 x Lewis suites ideal for families with teenage children, 2 x family suites ideal for families with small children. (The family suites include an en-suite master bedroom and an en-suite twin bedroom as well as a dining and lounge veranda area with a stone fireplace, and a private viewing deck with heated plunge pool). There is also 1 x Ebony Villa which comprises two family suites with access to an additional private lounge, swimming pool and deck area, which connects these two individual suites. It includes a private guide and vehicle, chef, host and banakeli (personal waiter). There is a private entrance and boma, so small groups searching for complete seclusion will be at ease. This villa is suited to up to four adults and four children under 12 years, or up to six adults and teenagers.

Fish River Lodge

The Fish River Lodge is the only lodge situated directly on the western edge of Namibia’s Fish River Canyon – the largest canyon in Africa, as well as the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia. The views are naturally spectacular, and the sunrises and sunsets even more so. From here, incredible hiking and cycling trails meander down into the heart of the canyon affording guests spectacular scenery combined with 75 kilometres of river frontage made up of permanent waterholes and rock pools. This attracts an array of wildlife species including Hartmans Zebra, Kudu, Oryx, Springbok as well as endemic birdlife.

Fish River Lodge is uniquely designed with dry-packed stone walls to keep the interiors cool and large windows offering panoramic views through which to contemplate 300 million years of geological history. It consists of twenty chalets which are perched on the brink of the canyon, far enough from each other to ensure peaceful exclusivity for all. Things to be aware of

The rooms do not have air-conditioning, but each room is equipped with a metal pedestal fan.

The Lodge is located a few metres away from the edge of the canyon, with modest wire rope barriers in front of each chalet and on the deck of the lodge. As a result, it is advisable that children will need parental supervision at all times for the duration of their stay.

Should you take part in the Canyon Hiking Package Activity through the lodge, you will require a Doctor’s Certificate of Fitness per hiker. And it’s worth noting that no children under 16 years old may take part.

Hiking is only done between April and September.

Tongabezi Lodge is a romantic hideaway on the banks of the Zambezi River in Zambia – just upstream of Victoria Falls. Tongabezi has been on this stretch of the river for over twenty-five years and some of the team have been with the lodge since the beginning. A stay with Tongabezi affords the perfect opportunity to experience Victoria Falls and her beautiful surrounds with all its wildlife. They have an extensive menu of inclusive activities which range from river safaris to a visit to Tongabezi’s very own Trust School, Tujatane. The Tongabezi Trust School, Tujatane, is a five-minute walk from the lodge. Not only does it provide free food and education to over 270 local children, it is a wonderful way for guests to interact with the local culture in a mutually respectful environment.

The gardens are immense and guests are very welcome to wander through. Here they grow a lot of their own fruit and vegetables, and try to design their menus around fresh produce coming from the garden.

The Tongabezi Team is mostly made up of local Zambians from Simonga village who have been trained up behind the scenes. Many of them have been with Tongabezi since they started, or for at least ten years. They are the true heart and soul of the lodge.

Tongabezi sits directly on the Zambezi river, so every room, except the family-designed Garden House, has a river view. They also make the most of their position by offering an immense choice of inclusive activities, ranging from island picnics to river safaris.

Sindabezi Island is part of Tongabezi, but fifteen minutes away by boat. It is made up of five open chalets and can be booked exclusively. Guests on the island are looked after by a private chef, a private guide and a private valet. The island also has a plunge pool that looks over the Zambezi where the hippos hang out in the river.

Things to be aware of

The main lodge has a minimum age of 7 and Sindabezi Island has a minimum age of 14, unless the island is being taken privately.

Wi-Fi is restricted to the main areas of Tongabezi.

Guests who are uncomfortable with bugs or very new to Africa may not enjoy the openness of the Sindabezi Island rooms or the Tree House at Tongabezi.

Turtle nesting season takes place between November and March and is when Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtles come ashore to nest. White Pearl offers infra-red turtle walks to the nesting sites in the evenings.

Manda Bay

Manda Bay is an intimate Kenyan boutique lodge located on the north-western tip of the unspoilt, idyllic island of Manda in Lamu’s archipelago. This is where you get to kick off your shoes and enjoy the simple, unpretentious things while being surrounded by natural beauty. The beautiful beachfront accommodation consists of 22 rooms in palm thatched cottages. Manda Bay combines a bush and beach experience. It is famous for its deep sea fishing during the months of November to April when the Sailfish and Striped, Black and Blue Marlin are migrating through their waters, and the ocean calmer and weather fine and dry. Common species to catch other than the billfish, are Dorado, Wahoo, Kingfish, Barracuda, Rainbow Runner and Yellow Fin Tuna.

Their food is some of the best in the Lamu area – fresh delicious fish sustainably caught from the local waters.

Activities include SUPboarding, waterskiing, wake-boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, and snorkelling.

Things to be aware of

It is advisable that elderly guests request rooms close to the main area as there is a bit of a distance to walk in the heat, which might be challenging for some.

The Lamu area was removed from all governmental travel bans in Europe in 2017.

Malaria is endemic on the Kenyan coast so there is an effective risk all year round, although being remote the risk is very low. With correct prophylactics, and sensible use of insect repellents, chances of catching malaria are minimal.

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

As its name suggests, the award-winning Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is the highest lodge in Uganda at 2 000 metres above sea level. It is set on a forested ridge near the entrance of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The lodge consists of 7 spacious cottages built from volcanic stone. Warm and welcoming, each cottage features a bedroom, en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower and a separate lounge. Comfortable chairs on the outdoor verandas provide the perfect vantage point to admire the unforgettable vistas of the forest below. Blazing fireplaces create a cosy glow as evening falls. Two of the cottages are suitable for families and have two double rooms, each with its own private bathroom.

On display in each cottage is the work of one of Uganda’s most respected artists. These beautiful artworks have been so highly regarded by guests, that specially commissioned pieces now grace the walls of homes and offices in New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles and London.

With its elevated position, enjoy spectacular views all the way to the Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda, as well as across the border into the Congo, where the glow of Nyiragongo Volcano can be seen on a clear night.

Most of the food is grown in the lodge’s organic garden and meals are made-to-order using the freshest ingredients. Even the bread served at breakfast is freshly baked.

The lodge is situated within easy walking distance of the Nkuringo trailhead in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where gorilla tracking takes place. Bwindi is believed to host half of the world’s mountain gorillas and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With friendly personal service and stunning views over Lake Malawi, Pumulani is the perfect African beach lodge. Pumulani means “rest well” in the local Chichewa language, and that’s exactly what’s on offer here – the chance to unwind in a beautiful and tranquil setting. Accommodation consists of ten villas: four twin, four king, one honeymoon and one family villa. Each of the villas has a large bedroom, which opens out onto a private deck where early risers can enjoy the morning’s first rays. The bathroom also offers spectacular views and comes equipped with a bathtub, double shower and double washbasins. There is a spacious lounge area, which offers further comfort for those wishing to relax in the villa.

There is an infinity swimming pool on the lower terraced deck. Three raised walkways with steps lead off from the central area to the villas, and down to the beach and a second infinity swimming pool. Sculpted into Mughwango Hill in Kenya’s Meru National Park lies the unashamedly romantic and beautifully styled Elsa’s Kopje. This environmental award-winning, boutique lodge sits above the site of George Adamson’s original camp where he raised and released orphan lions, long before conservation became fashionable. Named after Elsa the lioness, made famous by Adamson’s biographical book and film “Born Free”, Elewana Elsa’s Kopje remains one of the most elegant lodges in Africa, located in one of the most spectacular settings. The National Park incorporates an 84 km² rhino sanctuary, home to over 70 rhino, both black and white species.

Baker’s Lodge is situated right on the south bank of the mighty Nile River and transects Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda. The vast and magnificent views onto the river are a treat for visitors, as are nesting egret birds, elephants bathing and pods of hippos which can regularly be seen in the water. The lodge is intimate and set within a large private area with direct river access, large shady trees and wetland areas that host abundant birdlife along the water’s edge.

Each of the ten private and individual thatched safari suites is raised from the ground on supporting pillars and comes with its own deck overlooking the river. As the lodge is an eco-friendly top-quality establishment, the facilities are fan cooled, with netted windows and hanging mosquito nets. The en-suite bathrooms use solar panelled hot water showers and baths, and there is solar lighting throughout.

Things to be aware of

Not all of the en-suite bathrooms have a view, so if this important to you, you should request this when you make a booking.

As there are wild animals on the property it is advisable to be escorted to your room at night, for safety reasons.

It’s worth noting that the rooms don’t have windows per se. Instead, they have canvas walls which can be opened, leaving a screen to separate you from the outside. On hot nights, it is advisable to sleep with an open canvas and to leave your ceiling fan on.

Light sleepers might find the nocturnal sounds of the animals somewhat disturbing, but Baker’s Lodge will happily provide earplugs to help.

There are no power outlets in the rooms as the lodge is solar-powered, which gives you a great excuse for a digital detox. Wi-Fi is available at the main lodge.

Jack’s Camp is considered one of the most legendary and iconic camps in Southern Africa and sits in a striking spot on the edge of Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans, with views over glittering salt pans and shimmering expanses of sun-scorched earth. The camp is quirky, with forties-style interiors, decadent furnishings and a sleek swimming pool pavilion. Then of course there is the Underwater Room. Located on a reef 250 m from the shore, this is something of your own private “island”. It consists of three levels: the landing deck at sea level, with a lounge area and bathroom facilities, the rooftop which has a lounging area for sun-worshipping by day and stargazing at night, and the bedroom beneath the water level surrounded by panes of glass and affording magical 360-degree views. By night, the underwater spotlights situated on all sides of the room attract the shyer and more unusual marine life, for instance squid. The bathroom facilities include an open-air fresh water shower, a fully-functioning advanced marine toilet system that is eco-friendly, a small hand-wash basin and environmentally friendly, biodegradable shower products.

Meals are a variety of fresh locally caught seafood as well as beef, chicken and vegetarian dishes, most of which have a distinct Pemba touch to them. The resort has a swimming pool surrounded by loungers for your sunbathing enjoyment with bar service all day long. It is also used for dive instruction for beginners.

The weather during the low season can sometimes be erratic. At the discretion of the Resort, the Underwater Room will be closed for overnight stay. An alternative room will be provided as well as you being refunded the difference in cost.

The different levels of the Underwater Room are reached by ladders.

When staying in the Underwater Room, a mobile phone will be provided with the contact numbers required should you need assistance with anything. You will also have your own security guard who will be anchored to a buoy not far off from the room.

They accept children from the age of 7 years and upwards, while in the Underwater Room they need to be at least 12 years old.

Na’an ku se Lodge is Namibia’s first “charity” lodge, which combines conservation, responsible tourism and luxury accommodation. N/a’an ku sê means “God will protect us” in the San Bushman language, and their first love is the San people of Namibia. Zarafa Camp is an intimate, four-room exquisite tented camp located on the private 130 000 hectare Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana. The reserve links the Okavango Delta and the Chobe / Savute corridors. Few camps rival the location of this little gem, Botswana’s first and only Relais & Chateaux property. Overlooking the crystal waters of Zibadianja Lagoon, the source of the famous Savute Channel, every area of the camp has a magnificent view. The lagoon is also the water source for a tremendous population of wildlife – dry season sightings boast buffalo and elephant by the hundreds. Zarafa Camp is deemed to be the best and most environmentally-innovative camp on the continent. Only recycled hardwoods and canvas were used in the construction and all the camp’s electricity comes from its solar farm, while ‘bio gas’ plants recycle waste into usable cooking gas.

Wildwaters Lodge lies on a unique private island, nestled in luxuriant rainforest, mid-stream within the mighty River Nile in Uganda. Its supreme location on Kalagala Island can only be reached by boat, which makes it a very adventurous place to stay. It is uniquely perched on granite rocks with noisy and exciting foamy rapids roaring all around.

The accommodation is made up of ten stand-alone, elevated timber-floor, luxury suites with amazing river views. Of the suites, nine are deluxe suites and 1 is a family suite. Some suites have a unique view of the Nile rapids that are both breathtaking and spectacular, while other rooms offer views of a tranquil Nile. All suites are private and exclusive and can be made into a double, triple or twin configuration. A day bed is standard in all suites.

The suites enjoy glass-fronted windows, locally handmade furniture, stylish bathrooms with rain showers and secluded wooden decks with daybeds and romantic free-standing open-air bathtubs. Additionally, a room safe, mosquito nets and complimentary toiletries are available.

There is a lovely swimming pool carved out of natural pink granite rocks in the main communal lodge area. Things to be aware of

The roar of the racing white-water rapids creates noise that might disturb a night’s sleep. For some, earplugs might come in handy, while for others, however, the noise might be quite hypnotic and calming.

It’s worth noting that during certain periods of the year, the surrounding forests attract tsetse flies, and care should be taken to avoid being bitten by them. Precautionary measures include covering over exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and hats. Wear clothing fabric that has at least a medium weight. Wear neutral-coloured clothing as the tsetse fly is attracted to bright colours, very dark colours, metallic fabric, and the colour blue. Use an appropriate insect repellent as directed. Should you get bitten, apply antihistamine on the bites to remove the need to itch as broken skin is more inclined to become infected.

Parents need to keep an eye on their children as Wildwaters Lodge is situated on an island surrounded by grade 5 plus rapids.

The lodge welcomes day visitors at a cost, from 11:00 until the last boat off the island at 17:00. Should they choose to use the swimming pool and its facilities, they are charged additionally.

Since its establishment in 1989, Rovos Rail has earned its reputation as being the most luxurious train in the world. Singita Lebombo lies on the N’wanetsi River in a 33 000-acre private concession in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Nkwichi, which means “the sand that squeaks”, is a lost hideaway on the pristine Mozambican shores of Lago Niassa (Lake Malawi). Sitting gracefully on the edge of a lagoon system in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, is where you will find the Luangwa Safari House. The impressive Luangwa Safari House was designed to delight the senses from the minute you arrive, with its strong castle-like structure looming up in front of you. Things to be aware of

It is important to understand how the winds and tides change throughout the seasons in Diani, and how Alfajiri deals with it. The section of beach directly in front of Alfajiri Villas changes from middle of November to the end of January each year. In this part of the world they have trade winds and the Kazkazi winds change the landscape. The Kaskazi (north-easterly) wind blows and moves the sand away leaving the corals and rocks in front of the villas exposed at low tide. This is the case for a few months each year.

Alfajiri provides guests with reef-shoes; if you walk for few minutes along the beach, you will eventually reach pristine white sands. By the mid to end of January, the Kaskasi wind brings back the sands and white beaches can be enjoyed once more.

There is an open Land Rover to transport clients to the different beaches during their stay.

Diani Beach is a residential area and as a result, restaurants, cafes and nightlife are limited.

Apoka Safari Lodge is located on a picturesque “koppie” (small hill) with endless views overlooking the Narus Valley in the southwestern sector of the Kidepo Valley National Park. Kidepo is Uganda’s most remote park, bordering Sudan to the north, the Napore Mountains to the West, and the Morungole mountains to the East. The Kenyan border is just 5 kilometres from the park’s eastern boundary. Travellers who make the long journey north would agree that Kidepo is also the most magnificent park and ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses.

Apoka has established an ongoing relationship with the village of Lokorul, on the outskirts of the Kidepo Valley National Park and it is from here that they employ staff almost exclusively. Visits to the village are on offer to the guests so as to learn about the local culture. In return, the tourism dollars have contributed to the village building a clinic and Apoka has facilitated regular visits with a doctor in the region.

Kidepo is home to an amazing array of animal including around 80 species of mammals – 28 of which are not found in any other Ugandan National Park, including cheetah.

Due to its remote location, there are no crowds.

Things to be aware of

There are no fences on the property which means that wild animals can be found roaming around the grounds of the lodge. It is strongly advised that you get an attendant to accompany you when moving about the camp at night.

The lodge has been built in a rocky area, so caution is required while walking.

Despite the abundance of animals and a heavy population of the Big Four, there are no rhinos in Kidepo.

Apoka is not recommended for very young children (5 and under) especially as the lodge is built amongst rocks and cliffs, and due to the fact that there are wildlife wandering around the property.

Jao Camp

Set in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Botswana, the new Jao Camp will retain the same high stilted main area built into the tree canopy, with more private areas in amongst the trees. Of the entire Wolwedans Collection, Boulders Safari Camp is the most remote and “classic”. Found nestled into the grandeur of massive granite rocks, it is situated 45 km south of Wolwedans in Namibia and as far off the beaten track as it can get. The camp makes an ideal location from where guests can explore the deep south of NamibRand Nature Reserve with its vast stretches of pristine nature, as well as encountering small and large desert dwellers, intriguing flora and fascinating geology. Things to be aware of

There is no fishing at the lodge (or anywhere on the Zambezi) from December to March, as this is spawning season.

Island Lodge cannot accommodate children unless the entire lodge is reserved on an exclusive-use basis (River Lodge welcomes children).

Zambia is a malaria area and the necessary malaria prophylaxis should be used. Royal Chundu provides insect repellent; public areas and all suites are furnished with mosquito nets.

BirdNest Resort

BirdNest Resort is situated in southwestern Uganda on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi, only 2.5 hours away from Rwanda’s capital Kigali or 6 hours from Uganda’s capital Kampala. Spectacular views can be enjoyed here as the lodge is surrounded by picturesque green hills covered with farming terraces and a great array of birds of all sizes.

The lodge, which is easily recognisable by the big thatched roof, has a fascinating history. It tells the story of Francis (Frank) Kalemera Kalimuzo, who had visited Lake Bunyonyi many years back, fell in love with the area and decided to make it his home. In about 1963, he started putting up the first building at the lake, but this never came to fruition because even as he built, tourists asked if they could stay there.

Frank was an educated man who worked his way up to the position of Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. A military coup in 1972 brought drastic changes to the history of Uganda and his association with former President Obote was looked on with suspicion by the new President Idi Amin. In 1972, members of the notorious Public Safety Unit raided Frank Kalimuzo’s home and arrested him. He was never seen again. His legacy lives on and his devotion to work and patriotism was remarkable. In the period of Amin’s reign of terror the property and lives of many people were destroyed. The hotel at Lake Bunyonyi was occupied and vandalised by the soldiers of Amin’s regime. Frank Kalimuzo’s widow tried desperately to keep the hotel running, but the whole nation was falling apart.

Subsequent change of regimes in Uganda brought about peace and stability to the nation and a group of Belgian investors located Frank’s widow and renegotiated to renovate the hotel. The original hotel was rebuilt and expanded from a four-bedroomed lodging to the fifteen cozy-roomed building that is BirdNest Resort today – all with lake views.

There are also an additional seven nature-inspired cottages across the water for those who prefer more privacy.

Why we like it here

Ornithophiles (or bird lovers) will get some great viewing here. The word “Bunyonyi” locally means “birds” and the lake derived its name due to its attraction to over 200 bird species, including the grey-crowned crane, the white-tailed blue monard, the herons, the African Harrier Hawk, the egrets, slender-billed baglafetch, levillant cuckoo and the cardinal woodpecker.

The hotel has free use of dugout canoes which is a great reason to explore Lake Bunyonyi – by yourself or with a local captain.

The food is great here and their “speciality of the house” is any dish with fresh, local crayfish from the lake – and of course the original crispy Belgian chips.

Things to be aware of

To avoid the heat of the midday sun, game walks are either at dawn or in the early evening.

For your safety there is an armed and qualified walking guide as well as an armed askari / guard on game walks.

Due to safety concerns and other guests’ enjoyment of the camps, children from six years old are accepted in camp with international bookings and children from 10 years old with resident bookings. At Siwandu there is a limit of two children (aged 6 – 11) in each camp at any one time.

If guests book Siwandu Private Camp, no child policy applies. Children in camp are the responsibility of the parent or guardian at all times.

In the camp there is minimal mobile phone signal. They do not offer a Wi-Fi facility in camp but they do provide a laptop with internet connection in the reception area for guest usage, free of charge.

You will also enjoy incredible wildlife encounters on game drives in your own exclusive and open safari vehicles with their guide; on foot with a ranger on a bush walk, from one of the Lewa hides watching the wildlife pass by, or in a leather chair on the Sirikoi deck overlooking the busy waterhole and wildlife on the lawns.

One of the joys of Sirikoi is the busy waterhole right in front of the main deck, making it possible to see an array of wildlife without even leaving the lodge. We call this “armchair game-viewing”, and it is a defining feature of Sirikoi.

The ‘farm to plate’ dining experience at Sirikoi is exceptional. Meals at Sirikoi are colourful, fresh and unpretentious. All meals are served on the Sirikoi deck overlooking the Sirikoi waterhole. You will be delighted by the simple and elegant home-styled cooking, and even more so when they see where most of the fresh produce comes from – the prolific organic vegetable garden. Dining out in the wilderness on bush meals and having sundowners are another favourite experience at Sirikoi.

Visiting the Sirikoi vegetable garden and taking a tour with George Kaberia, the head groundsman, is an unexpected highlight for most guests. Learning from George and seeing first-hand what is involved in the organic farming process is fascinating and hugely rewarding.

With spring water feeding the garden, naturally rich soil, organic elephant-dung fertilizer made on site, and equatorial sunshine, the garden produces an impressive amount of fruits, vegetables and herbs – over 80 in fact – all year round.

Sirikoi also offers a beautiful infinity pool for you to relax after your activities, unless you prefer unwinding with a massage or browsing through the Sirikoi gift shop.

Sirikoi enjoys a lovely spring-like climate almost all year round, with Kenya’s arid North to one side, and the lush foothills of Mount Kenya on the other. Mornings are brisk, midday is rather warm, and evenings are always cool enough to appreciate a fire. The lodge is located at 5,500ft.

Mid-April to mid-May and November are usually the rainy seasons. January to March are the warmest months, and June to September is a bit colder.

The lodge grounds are fenced with a raised electric wire to keep elephant out of the garden to protect our trees. All other wildlife can move around freely. Askaris or night watchmen escort guests to and from their rooms at night with a torch, and in the day it is safe to walk around camp. There are askaris on duty 24 hours a day who are in radio contact with the manager should a guest needs assistance at night.

The lodge is located in a minimal risk area at 5,500 ft where the malarial mosquito does not exist. There are very surprisingly few insects in general and guests enjoy dining outside at all meals. Insect-repellant sprays and creams can be brought along if desired.

Serra Cafema Camp

Set under large, shady albida trees with uninterrupted views of the Kunene River in Namibia, lies the luxurious desert retreat of Serra Cafema. This is one of the most remote camps in southern Africa and a place where guests can truly disconnect, unwind and relax to the sound of rushing water, in one of the driest deserts in the world. Serra Cafema has eight “chalets” that are set on elevated decks and crafted in wood, canvas and thatch to create a unique camp that is at one with its surroundings. Seven of these are twin-bedded luxury tents each with two three-quarter beds. There is also one family luxury tented unit with two three-quarter beds in each bedroom, and each with its own bathroom. The bedrooms are connected through an adjoining deck with a shared sala.

The luxury canvas tents each comprise en-suite facilities with separate toilet, double vanity basin, indoor- and outdoor shower, indoor lounge area, outdoor sala and shaded seating / lounging deck area, mosquito net, electronic safe, hairdryer, writing desk and chair, mini-bar and tea and coffee making facilities. The main area, or “Ozonganda” in Herero, comprises various dining areas, sunken lounge, bar, curio corner and viewing decks affording spectacular views over the Kunene River. There is also a swimming pool.

Respectful interaction with the Himba community – a group of semi-nomadic pastoralists who live in the Kaokoveld area – when they are in the area.

As the only permanent source of water in the area, the Kunene River creates an oasis along its banks – visually creating a winding band of green surrounded by the lunar landscape of the Namib Desert.

Game viewing is limited to small herds of gemsbok, springbok and Hartmann’s mountain zebra, while the river has large populations of Nile crocodiles.

The lodge has a mutually-beneficial agreement with the Marienfluss Conservancy, which is primarily owned by the Himba people, including benefits like employment and skills transfers.

Things to be aware of

Only children of 6 years and older are accommodated at Serra Cafema, and between 6 and 16 years will need to share a room with an adult/s.

For families travelling with children between 6 and 12 years, private activities need to be booked and paid for.

The minimum age for walking activities is 13 years, while for quad-biking activities it is 16 years.

At this point in time, the lodge is not accessible on a self-drive basis.

Mattress converters are available that transforms twin beds into king-size beds.

There is no air-conditioning in the tents, however they do have a pedestal fan and a ceiling fan.

Mweya is an ornithologist’s paradise as it lies in the Queen Elizabeth National Park which hosts 612 bird species, which is the second highest of any park in Africa. Highlights include the Martial Eagle, the African Fish Eagle, Shoebill, Papyrus Gonolek, Lesser and Greater Flamingo, White-tailed Lark and Verraux’s Eagle Owl.

Game drives take you through the floor of the Rift Valley which teems with wildlife and you will more than likely get to see elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, waterbuck, bushbuck and warthog. Another common-but unexpected-sighting in this area is the magnificent Giant Forest Hog – Africa’s largest pig.

Water safaris take place on the Kazinga Channel giving you the chance to view the immense concentration of hippos at close range, over 100 species of water birds, majestic elephants in their natural habitat and the notorious Nile crocodiles sunbathing on the channel bank.

From the lodge, you will have easy access to trek Chimpanzees in the Kyambura Gorge (35 km away) which is noted for its high concentration of primate life, including red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus, baboons and vervet monkeys.

This is a big lodge offering many rooms in different categories. Should you require something more private, your own cottage, or a tent, would be more suitable.

Fanjove Private Island

When you think of Fanjove Private Island, think palm-fringed, powder-white sands, azure, shimmering waters, the call of birdsong and the whole island all to yourself. More or less. The island is part of Tanzania’s Songo Songo archipelago, and is a mere kilometre in length and 400 metres wide.

With only 6 eco-friendly Robinson Crusoe-type Bandas, Fanjove accommodates 12 people and its staff. The bandas are A-framed, shaped to resemble a Dhow sail, and each is open at its front to capitalise on the uninterrupted ocean views (which can also be enjoyed from the upstairs balcony). The whole property has been designed to minimise its environmental footprint. Solar power is employed for all the rooms, and the buildings use traditional, natural materials – sustainable wood, mukuti (palm leaves) and thatch.
