Tracking The Golden Monkey

Visitors tend to go to Mgahinga for a primate safari, and golden monkey (Ceropithecus Kandti) tracking is one of its highlights. Listed as endangered by the World Conservation Union and endemic to the Albertine Rift, the golden monkey is characterised by a bright orange-gold body, cheeks and tail, contrasting with its black limbs, crown and tail-end.

Tracking golden monkeys begins at the park’s headquarters and the actual trek is not as strenuous as gorilla tracking, as they live in lower altitudes. Once found, tourists are given an hour to observe them before returning.
